Since posting last week about minimizing mess creation, I have pretty much not followed my own post-cooking damage control advice. We have had dishes piled out of the sink that then sat around for another day--on two separate occasions...in one week. Oops. In our defense, we woke up Saturday morning with matching colds which have sapped much of our livelihood. We have also been consumed with frantic Halloween costume-crafting.
My boyfriend and I got invited to a Harry Potter themed Halloween party and I instantly had an idea for our costumes. The host still doesn't know what we're going to be, and just in case he reads this, I won't spill the beans yet. What I can say, however, is that aside from my purchase of gold snakeskin leggings from American Apparel (which simultaneously nauseate me and please me to no end), our costumes are homemade and crafted mainly from reusing boxes we squirreled away after the move. I don't doubt for a second that we will have some of the most distinctive costumes tomorrow night, and it's a comforting thought that the good things that emerge from what is an increasingly uniform and commercial holiday are more often than not old-fashioned rethinking of everyday objects. The ability to have a standout costume--no slutty cops here, pay very little for it, and in doing so salvage something destined for the recycling bin (or trash can if you're not so vigilant) is terribly exciting.
I'll share more details and some much needed photos of the costumes on Saturday.
